Your Guide to Home Decor Trends for Autumn 2024
We love autumn, with its rich natural palette and cosier, more home-based focus.
Celebrate the season by decorating your home with the latest autumn trends for 2024, an inviting blend of colour, texture and warm lighting.
Here are our favourite design tips this autumn.
1. Abundant harvest
This is the traditional look for October and November decor: red, gold and orange squashes sit among dried or silk autumn leaves, dotted with fairy lights or candles. It’s an inviting and rich look, and feels like an acceptably sophisticated way for grown-ups to decorate for autumn.
How to get the look
Take your pick of vibrant garlands, wreaths and floral displays made from faux foliage, or check out your local florist for beautiful natural versions.
2. Natural Decor
If you prefer a more natural look, pull on your wellies and go on a foraging expedition. Fallen branches, twigs and pinecones make perfect natural ornaments for autumn, along with shiny conkers, dried berries and branches of dried golden leaves. Use recycled glass or pottery vases and wooden bowls to display your woodland finds, or scatter them along window sills and mantelpieces.
How to get the look
Ideally, start gathering your natural decorations before you need them so you can dry the foliage properly. Add a dash of biodegradable metallic paint if you want to enrich the natural colours: just don’t stray too far into Christmas decor territory…
3. Autumnal nesting
A few years ago, we Brits went wild for the Scandinavian idea of hygge, and it felt like every home suddenly had faux fur rugs, Fair Isle throws and a lot of fluffy socks. Textured cushions and fleecy blankets are still the perfect look for this time of year, creating a comfortable and inviting space for the colder weather. Just add a fireplace, a mug of cocoa and a sleeping dog.
How to get the look
The Scandi-inspired decor and style trends of 2024 use natural base colours with pops of dark orange, red or dusky pink. We love throws and cushion covers in chunky knits, with pom-poms and tassels adding an extra dash of fun.
4. Gleaming metallics
Rich copper and gold tones chime perfectly with the autumnal palette. Metallics are one of the key design trends for autumn 2024, their warm hues blending beautifully with seasonal foliage. Select decorative items in brass or with painted metallic finishes, such as candlesticks, objects d’art and vases. The good news is that these sumptuous tones can be easily repurposed for Christmas.
How to get the look
Enhance the gleaming finish of your metallic decor using light. Strategically placed cream-coloured pillar candles and warm-white string lights bring a glow to the gleaming metallic surfaces.
5. Contemporary country
Over the last few years, this very British look has taken hold, from ornamental metallic stag heads to pheasant-and-foliage-themed tableware. Think sweeping country estates with misty-morning deer parks ringed with autumnal trees: the perfect look for this time of year. Sitting comfortably between classic and kitsch, contemporary country remains one of the most-loved autumn home decor trends.
How to get the look
Because it’s so popular, it’s easy to get hold of a hare print tablecloth or a deer-shaped candle holder. Combine it with other seasonal looks, such as natural autumnal foliage and dull metallic tones, to capture the richness this style can bring.
6. The sorting season
In the run-up to Christmas, it’s good to have a clear out and a tidy up. It’s also a great excuse to invest in some chic storage solutions, like recycled cardboard lidded boxes. This autumn, we’re loving brightly coloured boxes featuring retro-style candy stripes and bold polka dots. Natural woven boxes and baskets also feature among autumnal home trends for storage, and if you like the vintage vibe, try old hat boxes and even luggage as display storage.
How to get the look
Depending on your vibe, you’ll either head for the stationery store or the vintage emporium! The main thing you need for this look is time, as it involves sorting your possessions into neat display storage.
7. November magic
By mid November, the leaves-and-pumpkins look feels past its sell-by date but we’re not yet ready to launch into Christmas decor. How do we create a decorative scheme that livens up our homes in late autumn’s duller days? Stay with the natural autumnal themes but dial down the palette for a more wintry feel (try paler golds and natural materials). Alternatively, lean into the nesting look with greater enthusiasm as the weather gets colder: velvet throws, warm-coloured cushions and plenty of mulled cider on the go.
How to get the look
Natural materials like wicker and more silver-toned leaves help bring an elevated touch to autumnal decor. Branches decorated with string lights and traditional lanterns bridge the gap between autumnal and festive design .
