At Tilia, we continuously seek to bring new homes to stunning locations across England. That’s why Barnard Castle is home to our Castle Croft development. Read on to discover our top five reasons why you should make the town the next place you call home.
1. A Town Named After History
If you love to be surrounded by history and visiting local sights, Barnard Castle is the perfect place for you to consider your next home. The market town itself was named after the castle it was originally built around, and its remains are classed as a grade 1 listed building that dates all the way back to the 12th century. Not far from the castle sits Egglestone Abbey, the ruins of a small monastery just on the southern banks of the River Tees – just another one of Barnard Castle’s picturesque sights.
The town has plenty to explore including the Market Cross, locally known as the ‘Butter Market’ that is located right in the centre of the town after being built in 1747. In addition, the Barnard Castle stone bridge dates back to the 14th century and connects the town to Stratforth overlooking the castle.
2. Countryside Sights
Barnard Castle is surrounded by charming countryside views and is recognised as a ‘walkers are welcome’ town with plenty of green open space to explore. These parks include Deepdale Nature reserve, River View leisure park and Flats Wood hiking trail, all full of nature and wildlife to walk amongst and enjoy whilst you take in the views. Barnard Castle also sits alongside the River Tees, another easy-going route to hike, run or bike along, giving you plenty of opportunities to get outdoors.
3. Great Local Amenities
Castle Croft has been perfectly situated to give you easy access to great amenities in the local area, and with the town of Barnard Castle becoming a tourist attraction with all of its attraction and history, there are plenty of things to see and do in the surrounding area. The town centre is filled with a wide choice of restaurants, tea shops, cafes and pubs – known for their home-made food. The town also holds a monthly farmers market on ‘the cobbles’ and is one of the North East’s most popular markets selling artisan food and crafts from the local region.
Not far from the development is the Bowes Museum, an art museum with stunning gardens set in a 19th century French-style chateau that opened back in 1982 and gives the town that extra bit of heritage and culture to appreciate. For live entertainment, The Witham community arts centre in Barnard Castle offers a wide range of events and live performances of theatre, music, dance, film and comedy – with something there for everyone to enjoy.
